See saws
And empty diamonds
These things will stick around
Fields of mud
And dying grass
These things are fit to fade
Don't set your mind on time
Drag your thoughts through the ground
Don't set your mind on the concrete
Be as still as can be

Squall
02:58
|
|||
The trees danced like hydra
A winged serpent swept and dove through the sky
Frozen ash the size of ticks
Swirled around with leaves and sticks through the squall
I recall the sun bleached afternoons
And the marble winter mornings of my youth
But nothing quite so sentimental
As the terrifying size of a black sapphire sky
Tool shed doors waves around in a panic
Burrowed underneath a family of rabbits stayed warm
The birds left the air to who knows where
The sun played the coward
Just a little scared, Just a little scared
I recall the sun bleached afternoons
And the marble winter mornings of my youth
But nothing quite so sentimental
As the terrifying size of a rose petal

Possum
04:09
|
|||
Out in the yard
Next to the garden shed
There's a rabbit trap
With which we never catch rabbits
Mostly squirrels
And smaller critters
That can fit through the holes
After taking the bait
I went in the yard today to see the sun
And saw in the cage an opossum
Curled up by the side of the gate
Lying still to deceive fate
I moved the trap
Out of the shade
Onto the grass
And I sat
His eye turned
To meet my gaze
With mouth ajar
He looked afraid
I stared into the soul of that rat
To find something behind all the meat and fat
But all I saw was drool fall down its cheek
No capacity for sympathy
And when I opened up the trap for his escape
I was expecting him to jolt away
But he took his time at a leisured pace
He waddled away with a lumbering grace

Fallen Timbers
02:58
|
|||
That tiny twitching bird, perched on a rock
Jutting out from the bed of glowing, swaying stalk
Bathed by the sun, brushed by the air
Smelling of heat and soil
It tugs at your sense, and leads you by the heart
Down through the clearing of green, where the pine trees part
You stood with the sky and danced with the light
Through the brush and bough
How is it so

Sunday

Sunday
I feel like a wishing well
With no bottom it's hard to tell
What words to write
What thoughts to think
How far to sink
Sundays
Are always such beautiful days
And it would be such a shame
To stay inside
With your lines and rhymes
Just passing time
So take a walk outside
Don't need a dog, just time
So take a walk outside
The mind will clear
Of din and fear
You'll be alright
Sunday
The sun shines so bright on the snow
Every year we forget its glow
And the cold we feel
That warms our meals
And bites our nose
Sunday
I'll never recall the way
Your mornings blind my eyes
To spite the blinds
And draw your lines
Of dust and shine
So take a walk outside
Don't need a dog, just time
So take a walk outside

Happier
02:18
|
|||
I am happier
Than a toad thawing in the spring
Than spadefoots hearing the rumbling
Of desert rainfall up above
My smile stretches wide
Like horizon lines at eventide
Like stratus clouds on a starless night
To cover moonlight up above

Raccoon Fight
03:22
|
|||
The families of rocks cling together by the stream
That rust gleam stream
Banked by the damp soil
As summer starts to wane
There are new songs outside my window
There are new birds, there are new clouds, there are new sounds
Last night I saw two raccoons fighting with each other
They tumbled and rolled as one near the edge of the brush
But because it was so dark out it looked like one large demon fish
Flopping on the grass
Tossing in the dark
Giving me a fright
Thank you Lord
Then a storm covered our town for the next few hours
And trying to sleep
I could see the lightning flash thrice a second through the blinds
Dreaming of flooded ski resorts
I woke up with a charley horse
In my left calf, yea it hurt real bad
Bright lights were falling to the ground
God was smashing cymbals in my ear
The epileptic sky poured water down my throat
The jittery stars
The sparsed out static
The beating dark
Thank you Lord

Spotted Orb Weaver
02:46
|
|||
Spinning silk across the emergency post
In the shape of a bullseye
The form of a spiral
I walked through the dark to meet my friend
Every night at 8pm
Mr. Spider, how do you do today?
I'm doing swell, the post is warm
Last night brought the most horrific storm
But my house stood strong
Some gnats and a fly decided to stop by
For that I'm thankful
Yes I'm quite alright

Arborvitae
04:40
|
|||
I went for a walk around my neighborhood
And on that walk I passed by the hospital, where by one of it's parking lots
There was a collection
A congregation? a grouping?
Of arborvitae trees, about seven or eight of them planted in a line,
Separating the lot from the house on the other side.
There was a noise coming from this pack of thuja
A loud chattering, a busy clamor, a restless commotion.
It was a flock of birds, of the small kind, sparrows? finches?
They were shielded by the brush so I couldn't get a good view of them,
All I knew was that they were loud as hell.
I took a recording of them with my phone, and earlier in this song you might have heard them,
Either that or you heard the sound of brussels sprouts frying.
I put both in, it may take a discerning ear to distinguish the two.
I was curious if I could get the flock to leave their shelter
So I bent down and picked up some snow, wet and a little icy, good for snowballs
And I hurled it at the loudest section of the arborvitae.
I was hoping to see a great migration, but apparently my projectile wasn't threatening enough to them.
They gave me silence instead, like the wrong word said at a dinner party
Though that would be an awkward silence, I don't know if I can say this was awkward,
It was more of a fearful silence.
So I left them.
